So here I am, working my day job, never had a break from it, its just work and no play, comes with having children early I guess. When I say children I mean child, my daughter, she’s my world, my rock, the only thing that keeps me sane in this life. You hear about daughter’s and fathers clashing when the girl becomes a teenager, not Indy and me, I don’t think I’ve ever had a fight with that girl…oh wait yes I have, one day when she was four, she’d already had three scoops of ice cream and wanted more, I said no, she told me she hated me and ran off…later on that day she came back, hugged me and apologized and told me she loves me. That’s the one thing I love about being a dad, the unconditional love your child gives you, even if your yelling at them for something, they still love you.
I gaze over at the pictures I have on my desk, it was a slow day at work so this was all that could keep my entertained. The picture in the little pink heart shaped frame is of India and I, Indy has her arms around me and she’s kissing my cheek, she was five and in kindergarten when this was taken, seems like an age ago, I was young, not older then twenty-three and India was five.
Next to this photo was a photo of Mum, India and me, India is fourteen months old in this picture and grinning up at the camera, mum and I are looking at each other and grinning, it was taken on Father’s day 2010.
Next to that is an assortment of pictures of India, in one of those ‘school age’ frames, one photo for every year up until year nine, which she is in now. It’s hard to believe now that I’d met India’s mother when I was sixteen, India is fifteen now! And Bridget was pregnant with India when she was just turned seventeen. I’ve already given India the contraception talk and told her that anytime she needed to go on the pill she should just ask me!. I’m in to hurry to become a grandfather! I’m only thirty three….
In a brown photo frame stands a picture of Bridget and me and our daughter, the day that she was born. One of the happiest days of my life, Bridget looked gorgeous and she’s still the most gorgeous women in my memory, even if hadn’t seen her in fifteen years.
My wife, India’s mother, was the love of my life, no one could ever replace her and no one could live up to her standards!.
Of course over the years I had dated other women, I mean I was only 19 when I lost Didge…..I couldn’t stay single forever. But honestly I was just in it for the sex, I never loved any of them, I don’t think I even liked any of them…I know that sounds bad but it’s the truth, I basically used them for one purpose.
I check the time on my computer, it’s 3:45, my mobile rings, it’s India.
“Dad where are you?” she asks me, “It’s freezing out here!”.
“Oh is that my long lost daughter?” I asked mockingly.
“Come get me!” She said not hesitating at my mocking joke.
“Only because you asked so nicely princess!” I said then hung up.
I kissed my hand then pressed it on the photo of Didge from India’s birth and whispered ‘I love you’ before departing the building.
Little did I know that my world was about to change forever!.
