“I cant do that!” Donna looked shocked when we asked her, “You’re her dad, you’re the one who’s meant to give her THE TALK”.
“You’re her god mother!” I told her, “Didge appointed you to help raise India”.
“You’re her dad!” Donna cried, “You made her”.
I went to yell back when mum pushed in between us.
“Time out, you guys are acting like a couple of kids, Donna, talk to India, at least give her some sort of motherly advice and Declan, go home before your daughter sneaks out!” Mum yelled at us.
I looked at Donna pleadingly.
“Oh alright!” she threw her arms up into the air, “I’ll come with you”.
“You owe me big time for this!” Donna said in the car drive home, “I’m thinking chocolate cake and ice cream every night for the rest of the year”.
“Yum!” Krystal yelled from the backseat, “Can I have some mummy?”.
“Oh yeah Declan Krystal needs some too, she is being forced over to your house as well” Donna babbled on and on.
“Shh” I said as we got into the house, “Can you hear that?”.
“Hear what?” Donna asked.
“Shhh!” I whispered sneaking in.
I could hear muffled talking from India’s room, I checked the phone and realised that the light was off so India was definitely not on the phone to anyone.
“I still need to get dad to get me some” I heard India say.
“You don’t need it believe me” I heard a guy say to her.
“I want to be sure” India replied.
“No really you don’t need it” he said.
Then I could hear kissing sounds, I didn’t leave it a moment longer, I opened the door to find India and this guy on the bed in a very compromising position. I marched over to the guy grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and marched him to the front door.
“Dude what is wrong with you!” He cried out in shock as I threw him out the door.
“Stay out of my house and away from my daughter!” I yelled at him, “If you don’t I have a rifle in my cupboard, I doubt anyone would miss you!”.
He looked scared for a second before saying “Whatever old man!”.
“Get off my property!” I screamed.
He ran out of my yard actually genuinely scared of me, I smiled then closed the door and turned to a furious looking India.
“DAD WHAT THE HELL!” she screamed at me.
“Stay away from him” I snapped at her, “If he ever goes near you again..so help me!”.
“You can’t ban me from seeing someone!” she yelled at me.
“Yes but I can physically stop you, I have a leash in my cupboard from the dog we used to have” I snapped at her, “And India, do not ever bring boys into this house while I’m not here, understood!”.
She sneered at me “Whatever dad!” and walked off.
“Well I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say you just ruined your daughter’s life and reputation” Donna walked up and stood next to me.
“How old did that guy look, Donna I don’t know about you but I don’t want my daughter in bed with any guy..ever!” I snapped walking into the kitchen.
“He looked about sixteen to me” Donna said, “And Declan, India doesn’t seem like she’s ready to take those steps anyway!”.
“She damn well better not be!” I snapped and went to sit on the couch.
“Can I remind you Declan, Bridget was only just seventeen when you guys..did it” Donna told me.
“And I am in no hurry to be a grandad” I turned the tv on, “are you going to go talk to her or not?”.
Donna looked at me then sighed and got up, “sure but I think she’s a bit pissed off at you right now so I don’t know what I can do, but I’ve been known to work miracles”.
I watched Donna walk out the door and at the same time I thought ‘I wish Didge was here to help me’.
Unbeknown to me India sat in her room and at the same time she thought ‘I wish mum was here to help me’.
Donna stood in the doorway to India’s room and just raised her hand to knock on the door when suddenly there was a clap of thunder and it started pouring down rain.
I had no idea then that my life had changed forever, all I could think of was my cars windows were open.

Half an hour away at Melbourne Airport a plane from Istanbul touches down, a woman steps off first, she is no older then thirty-one. She stands with a girl and a boy, the girl is about six years old, she is of Italian decent, she has curly hair like her mother but brown eyes, not the blue ones her mother has. The boy is about four, he is also of Italian decent, blue eyes like his mother and black straight hair.
They move swiftly through the airport and out to the other side to get into the bus, the woman who calls herself Amy doesn’t know where to go yet but something was telling her to go back to Australia, although she didn’t know what yet.
“Mama?” the boy asked in Italian, “where are we going?”.
“Not now Joseppe” She said to him.
“Why?” He asked.
“I’m trying to find someone, or something” She tried to explain.
“I’m hungry!” the girl said.
“We’ll get lunch soon Rosetta” She said to her.
They sat in silence for a little while longer before Amy noticed a sign, it said Erinsborough this exit, she knew that name from somewhere, she went to the front of the bus.
“Are we stopping in Erinsborough?” she asked the driver.
The bus driver nodded, “sure are”.
Amy walked back to the back of the bus and sat next to her son, “We’re getting off soon, then we’ll have lunch and I’ll keep trying to find something”.
Meanwhile in Erinsborough I and India were in Harolds store, India was stocking up on food for the slumber party she was having at their house that night with her cousin and closest friends.
“Well she hasn’t talked to me, and she wouldn’t say anything to Donna” I stood with my mum who was there buying milk.
“Dad we need two bags of snakes too” India said.
“Why?” I asked.
“Snake tying comps!” India rolled her eyes and placed all the food she wanted on the counter.
“You have got to be joking” I looked from my daughter to the massive pile of food that was on the bench and back at my daughter again.
“Dad there’s going to be sixteen other people there!” she told me, “We need this much”.
“I cant believe I said yes to this” I sighed “a night with seventeen teenage giggling girls”.
“And we get your bedroom” India teased.
“Touch any of the pictures on the wall and your dead” I told her.
“Yeah yeah I’d never tamper with your precious photos, their like your children!” she teased me.
“Are not!” I poked my tongue out at her.
“Are too” She did the same the said, “Hey these guys look lost”.
I turned around, my breathing hitched as I looked at this woman, sitting at a table with her two kids, she was looking around nervously as her children hit each other with the menus. She was stunningly gorgeous, I couldn’t take my eyes off her.
“Dad where are you going?” India asked me as I stumbled over to them.
“Hey are you ok?” I asked the woman.
“Ci..i mean yes” She said without looking at me.
“Are you sure, you look a bit lost” I said.
The woman looked up at me and her jaw dropped, “Do I know you?” she asked.
“I don’t think so?” I said.
“Sorry you look familiar, I’m Amy” she said holding out her hand.
“I’m Declan, that’s my daughter India” I shook her hand then pointed at India.
India walked over and the woman’s eyes widened, “You look like my daughter, I mean you look like her, and your eyes!”.
“I have my mothers eyes” India said without hesitation.
“Yeah sorry” Amy looked taken aback, “You look like Rosie”.
Rosetta turned around and looked at India, I looked at Rosie in shock, “She looks like India when she was six”.
“I know that this may seem weird, but do you want to come to my house?” I asked her.
She nodded, “Yeah you look so familiar, do you live far from here?”.
“Around the corner, India and I walked here to get snacks for her slumber party” I told her.
Once we got home I sat Amy down at the kitchen table with a coffee, “Where are you from?”.
“I don’t know” She told me, “first thing I actually remember is my wedding day”.
I looked at her in shock, “You don’t remember?!”.
“No I had amnesia, and It’s never recovered, my ex husband took me in, we had Joey and Rosie in Australia then moved to Italy, then my ex started cheating on me so we got a divorce, I took the kids, he doesn’t want anything to do with them, and so I am here” she explained.
“so where are you staying?” I asked her.
“no where yet, I just felt I needed to come back, I don’t know why though” she said.
“Well I would offer you here, but I have no room, unless you want us to sleep in India’s room altogether, but my brother owns lassiters so I can get you a room there” I told her.
“Whats lassiters?” she asked me.
“It’s a hotel” I told her, “I’ll drive you over”.
I got up and yelled up the hallway, “INDIA”.
“What?” she came down the stairs.
“I’m taking Amy to lassiters, no boys” I told her, I’d been saying no boys before I every time since the other day.
“I know dad” she told me.

“Here we are” I put Amy’s bag on the floor of the hotel, “Joey and Rosie can stay in the room next door”.
She nodded then opened her bag and started pulling out photos of which she began placing around the room.
I think she noticed that I was startled by this because she said “it makes me feel more at home”.
“Right” I nodded looking at the closest photo, it was of Rosie when she was a baby, the only reason I could tell was from the pink blanket she was wrapped in.
“She looks like India” I noted out loud.
“How is that possible?” Amy asked me, “They’re not related”.
I nodded, “She could pass off as India’s little sister though”.
“What happened to India’s mother?” Amy asked me.
I felt tears creep up on the edge of my eyes, “She died”.
Amy nodded, “I sort of guessed that, you have a memorial of her in your house no?”.
I nodded, “India thinks that it’s weird, but I’ve never stopped loving my wife”.
“She was your soulmate?” Amy asked, “I’m sorry but this is sounding really familiar to me”.
“She was my soulmate, you seem really familiar but I cant put my finger on it” I sighed standing up, “I think I should go..before my daughter gets into mischief with her friends”.
I practically ran to the car and sat in the front to take a breather, “she cant be Didge, Didge is dead and I’m being crazy”
I drove to the cemetery and sat in the car for a few moments collecting my thoughts, “That girl of Amy’s does resemble India, actually she looks exactly like India”.
I got out of the car and walked to Didge’s gravesite…but another name stood where Didge’s used to be.
Hector Longdale, 1913-2010, loving husband to Doris, father to Catherine and Margaret, grandfather to James, Alan and William, great-grandfather to seven. we will miss you!
my heart skipped a beat as I frantically looked around, then realised that this was definitely Didge’s gravesite, my jaw dropped.

“Dad what the hell are you doing?” India asked me as I pulled out files from our filing cabinet in the study.
“Trying to find Bridget’s death certificate” I said throwing random files aside.
“You get a certificate when you die? What does it say, congratulations you’re dead!?” India asked me sarcastically.
“India” I warned as if to say get out of the room before I throttle you.
“Fine, fine” She said, “Oh dad we are going to need the kitchen for a while”.
“Yeah whatever” I waved her out of the room, “AHA, oh wait no that’s Bridget’s birth certificate”.
“You kept her birth certificate?” India wondered out loud, “Sometimes I worry about you dad”.
She left and I frantically looked through the files again before running out to get the phone to ring mum.
In the kitchen the girls were making some disgusting concoction which I guessed some poor sucker would have to eat but I didn’t really pay attention to it, as long as their happy and having fun I don’t have to do anything, so I grabbed the phone and walked out again.
“Mum” I said as she answered, “Do you know where Bridget’s death certificate is?”.
“Dec….” Mum started.
“Mum just answer me, where is it?” I said, “I swore I packed it in the filing cabinet in the study but…”.
Mum sighed on the other side of the phone, “Dec…Bridget’s not dead..she’s sitting next to me right now”.
My jaw dropped at the same time the phone did, “India I’m going out for a minute” I managed to yell as I ran out the door.

I went to pull out of the driveway just as mum pulled in, she stopped her car and got out before promptly walking around the car and opening the other door for a woman.
My jaw once again dropped, this woman looked like Amy did, however she was now about eight months pregnant and smiling up at me.
“Hey Dec” She said leaning over to kiss me.
I flinched back before yelping “Amy?”.
“Amy? Who’s Amy?” She asked me, “I’m Bridget remember?”.
I shook my head and turned around, my jaw dropped again, the house was different, it was bigger for one and two cars were in the carport instead of one.
I looked back at mum and the woman, the woman now looked distinct fully like Bridget, exactly how she was when she died give a few years. Mum was younger, she was holding a two year old girl.
“India” I gasped taking her off mum, “Your small again?”.
Mum looked at me concerned and Bridget glanced in mums direction.
“Are you feeling ok Declan?” Mum asked me.
I shook my head, “This is like a dream come true”.
“what is?” she asked me.
I shook my head then kissed her on the lips, I got goosebumps all over my body as I deepened the first kiss I’d had in fifteen years with my wife. Then I realised that it hadn’t actually been fifteen years, and this was reality.
I took Bridget’s hand and lead her into the house with mum following behind us, I almost yelled out to India that I was home, then I realised that India was that little girl in my mums arms.
I went and looked where India’s room was and it was a little fairy princess room, complete with a dresser and mirror that were pink.
I went upstairs then and saw that our room was different, there were pictures on the walls but they were of our daughter only.
I went back downstairs and took India off mum, she looked at me with a knowing glint in her eye and she said “I know daddy”.
“Know what?” I asked her.
“Mummy!” India reached over to be taken by Bridget without answering my question, from then on I knew that I wasn’t alone, that India knew what had happened as well.
