Before I knew it I was locking lips with her again, I pulled away and walked over to the couch and sat down. Then got up again realizing that if I was on the couch she might get more idea’s so I stood there arms crossed looking at her.
“What’s up?” She asked, “No repeat of last night?”.
I suddenly felt physically sick again and I ran to the sink and threw up.
“That’s disgusting…” She muttered as I cleaned the sink again.
“Look…” I strained to remember her name, “Fi…Fi…Fiona!...last night was a mistake..”.
She nodded, “I know..”.
“How?” I asked.
“You told me about 4000 times last night” She said, “the whole time we were…you know…you said it”.
I moaned and sat back on the couch again ignoring my previous thoughts, “Why did I do this?”.
“Because you needed it” She said, “How long has it been?”.
“None of your business!” I snapped.
“Fine then” She went and put the kettle on, “Want one? You look dead”.
I put my head in my hands, “Okay thanks”.
“You didn’t do anything wrong” She said as she got out the coffee from the cupboard.
“I know I didn’t but it feels like it” I looked at the ring on my finger.
“your wife would want you to be happy” She said placing my coffee in front of me.
“I’m sorry but I don’t think you have the right to tell me what my wife wants and doesn’t want” I snapped.
“Okay fine, I just think that mourning her for the rest of your life is no way to live” She said sipping on her coffee.
I sat up straight and glared at her, “So you think that I can just stop mourning Didge? Just like that? I cant! She was my soulmate!”.
“Talk about a mood killer…” She muttered looking down at her coffee.
“What mood?” I slammed my cup down on the table making coffee splash everywhere, “Thanks for your hospitality but I think I have to go now”.
She looked disappointed as I walked out of the house and back to my car.
As soon as I got in my car I sat in the drivers seat and pulled out my wallet, there was a faded picture of Bridget, Me and India the day Indy was born in there.
‘I just think that mourning her for the rest of your life is no way to live’ echoed through my head as I turned my car on and pulled out from my car space.
---
“Where the hell have you been!!!” Mum yelled as I walked through the door, “I’ve been up all night with India, she was crying out for her dad all night!”.
I looked at mum sadly then sat on the couch picking up one of India’s dolls as I sat down.
“Are you okay?” Mum looked worried as she came over and sat down, “What happened Dec?”.
I shrugged as I smoothed down the dolls clothes, “I did something really stupid last night”.
Mum looked slightly shocked, “What was that?”.
“I ended up in a pub out the other side of Melbourne I don’t even know where” I said still playing with the doll.
“Yes I thought as much” Mum said concerned.
“I met a girl…One thing led to another…and I ended up outside her house in my car with no recollection of anything that happened” I sighed looking up at mum, “I feel disgusting”.
Mum’s mouth was making a perfect ‘O’ shape and I could see a flicker of shame in her eyes.
“Don’t bother mum, I’m beating myself up enough” I said trying to spare myself a lecture.
“So do you know for sure if you two…” She asked.
“She implied it and when I knocked on her door she was wearing only a sheet..” I sighed.
Mum nodded sadly, “Don’t beat yourself up too much about it Dec, you were drunk after all”.
“So that makes it alright, hey I can abandon my daughter for a one night stand with a random if I’m drunk!” I said sarcastically.
“No I didn’t mean it like that” Mum looked concerned for me.
“Nah look I need to see Indy, where is she?” I asked.
“She’s over at Donna and Ringo’s” Mum said, “I think that you should cool off first, India’s had a rough night!”.
“Which means she need’s her dad” I got up and walked to the front door.
“She needed her dad last night but he was nowhere in sight!” Mum snapped.
“Thanks mum” I opened the door then slammed it in her face.
---
“Declan” Donna said in surprise as I marched in.
“Daddy!” India ran over to me and jumped into my arms.
“Hey beautiful girl” I held her above my head, “Did you miss me last night?”.
“Where did you go?” India frowned at me, her mothers frown.
I put her on my hip to avoid dropping her as my arms now felt like jelly, “I just went and spent some time with a friend Indy”.
India looked at me, “What friend daddy? All your friends live in Sydney”.
I put her on the floor again, “I met her last night”.
“Her?” Donna and Ringo said at the same time.
“It’s nothing” I said in a warning tone before turning back to India, “Want to go get an icecream with your dear old dad India?”.
India nodded happily.
“Thanks for looking after her guys” I said to Donna and Ringo.
“Okay you take care” Donna waved at me whilst looking at me knowingly.
I shot her a look as if to say “shut up”.

The next day we returned to Sydney to prepare for New Years Eve. Miranda and Steve were coming down for a visit on the 29th-31st of December but they were heading back up north for new years. I’d already planned my new years with my little girl, I am going to take her to see the fireworks and we are going to watch them from the Opera House.
India had no idea but she’d always loved watching fireworks, they seemed to fascinate her so I’m hoping that she’d enjoy seeing these fireworks.
The car trip home was peaceful which was unlike my farewell to my mother and friends.
---
“Take care Declan” Mum said in a warning tone, “I don’t want you forgetting your studies, India really needs you to have a good career so that she can get the best out of life”.
This was another way of saying ‘Don’t you ever go out and pick another woman out of a bar and have a one night stand with them again’.
I nodded, “Don’t worry mum I’ve learnt my lesson”.
“Your lesson about what?” mum feigned innocence.
I sent her a look to which she just smiled back then went to pick up India to say goodbye to her.
“You be a good girl for your daddy” Mum told her.
“Okay grandma” India smiled.
“Look after him” Mum listed.
“I will grandma” India laughed.
“Don’t let him get into trouble” Mum continued listing things.
“I wont grandma” India kept laughing.
“If he does get into trouble…” Mum then whispered something in India’s ear and then said, “Ring me on daddies phone I’m on speed dial 1, you know what 1 is don’t you?”.
“Yes grandma” India nodded before Mum kissed her on her cheek and handed her to me.
“Alright you two I think you should leave before I start bawling my eyes out!” Mum said, “Goodbye Declan, take care of my granddaughter”.
“Of course I will mum” I smiled, “Ready to go Indy?”.
India nodded so I helped her into her car seat.
“I told India if she ever feels the way you made her feel on boxing day again she only has to ring me and I’ll be there in a flash to take her home with me” Mum told me.
“You cant do that!” I said aghast at my mothers motives, “I’m her father”.
“And I’m your mother and I know what’s best for you” Mum snapped, “You’re never going to make your daughter feel that badly again do you understand me Declan Napier!”.
I sighed and nodded, “I didn’t mean to in the first place mum”.
“I know you didn’t but if this is some sick way of getting over Bridget it’s the wrong thing to do!” Mum said in a warning tone, “One night stands are not the right thing to do to get over someone”.
“Oh get over it mum” I yelled, “I made a mistake and I’m regretting it so much now! Everytime I look at India I see Bridget, I see the expression I’d imagine Bridget would have if she saw me having a one night stand and I hate myself for it, I hate everything!”.
India started crying from the backseat of my car so I reached in to get her out.
“NO I WANT GRANDMA!” India screamed in my face, “YOU’RE MEAN DADDY!”.
I felt shocked, this was the first major outburst my daughter has ever had towards me and I just backed away silently and let mum get her out.
“Shh Indy” Mum cooed as India’s head rested on her shoulder, mum shot me a look.
“Come on India I didn’t mean to yell at your grandma” I tried to console her enough to let me take her out of mum’s arms, “I was just a little angry, just like you were when you just yelled at daddy”.
India seemed to take this into account and reached over so that I could take her from mum.
Mum shook her head and mouthed ‘whatever go home before I take Indy from you’ to me before walking back into the house.
“Come on India” I smiled, “What do you say? If we get to Gundagai before lunch time I’ll let you have a bubble-o-bill?”.
India smiled and nodded, “Okay daddy”.
I put her in the car then started the car up and pulled out of the Robinson driveway and back to mine and India’s separate lives from Ramsay Street.
---
“Guess what Indy!” I grinned, “We’re in Gundagai and it’s only 11:50!”.
“BUBBLE-O-BILL!” India screamed happily.

(I used to love Bubble-o-bills haha)
Months have passed and i've settled back into balancing work, uni and my daughter. It was a delicate set of scales and incorruption of one of these three things could over balance the whole scale of our lives.
Well that was until I caught hypothermia and i ended up in hospital for two weeks. This upset my whole world and that of my daughters. I was rushed to hospital after being found on the beach. I had gone out for a swim whilst waiting for Indy to finish pre school and not realizing how the cold water could set in so quickly. The next thing i knew i woke up in hospital, the first thing i asked was for India but none of them seemed to know anything about her.
"Yes Declan we'll keep looking for her" One of the nurses told me as i yelled out for India on the 3rd day after being unable to sleep.
"We're going to have to give him medication, if he doesnt stop this idea that he has a long lost daughter then we might have to sedate him and send him to an institution" The nurses said out of earshot of me.
"Okay Declan we need to give you a little bit of medicine" They said coming in with two small pink pills.
"If i take them can you please tell me where my daughter is?" I asked them both looking at the pink pills now on my tray.
"Yes but you have to take these pills first" She told me.
"Okay fine" I swallowed both pills and i was about to question them again when i passed out.
"He'll be out for a couple of hours at least" A nurse said, "That's time to do a bit of research on this Declan fellow".
They left the room whilst i was still sleeping soundly and began their research into my life and to find out if i really did have a daughter.

India sat in shock in the social workers car. She didnt know what was happening and where her daddy went and why he didnt come collect her like he did every day. She stared out at the cherry tree on the nature strip, there was one of those outside her and daddies house. Her eyes wandered to the house that the lady, Ms Benwick had pulled up outside of. It was small and bricked, nothing like her and daddies house, their house was two story and wooden.
"Come on India" Ms Benwich said happily.
India shook her head, "I want daddy".
"We are trying to find your daddy but right now you need somewhere to live" She told India.
"NO DADDY!" India yelled blocking her ears, "DADDY DADDY DADDY DADDY DADDY DADDY...." India chanted.
"INDIA" Ms Benwick grabbed her by her arms and cried, "LOOK AT ME".
India was hesitant in opening her eyes but when she did the sight that greeted her was worse then she suspected.
Ms Benwick looked furious, "India listen to me, you're going to get out of this car and you are going to go stay with these people, it'll only be til we track down your father or mother".
"DADDY" India yelled, "NO MUMMY!".
"Okay we'll look for your father but right now you need a warm meal and a nice bed to stay in and these people Mr and Mrs Johnson will give you one, and you'll have plenty to do there's other children to play with and they have plenty of toys!" Ms Benwick told India.
India sighed and let Ms Benwick take her out of the booster seat and put her on the ground.
"Dont worry we'll find daddy" Mrs Benwick told India
India ignored her as the door opened and a familiar face greeted her.
