She couldn’t be bothered opening her eyes but the first thing she heard was that dam frog croaking. She mentally cursed it, but when she felt James arms tighten around her she completely forgot about the wretched thing.
He was spooned around her, their limbs entangled, and she sighed in complete and utter happiness.
She had regularly fantasized about what it would be like to be with him, but the night they shared together completely surpassed her wildest fantasies.
The first time was urgent and frantic, as their need to satisfy the desire that had been building between them for the last 18 months over took them. Inhibitions were non-existent as they were finally able to give in to their lust for each other.
The second time was slow, intense, and sensual, as was the third and fourth time, as they spent the rest of the night exploring each others bodies and discovering new ways to pleasure each other.
The love she felt for him was almost overwhelming and just knowing he was next to her made her glow. She rolled over and snuggled in under his chin and as he began to stir he pulled her in close to him and lightly kissed the top of her head.
“Good morning,” he mumbled into her hair.
“I think it’s more like good afternoon,” she laughed quietly as she stroked his arm slowly.
He opened his eyes then.
“You reckon,” he said unconvinced.
“Well it was about 4am when we raided the fridge and almost dawn when we finally fell asleep you know,” she laughed.
‘Oh well….who cares,” he answered with a satisfied smile and began stroking her arm.
“I need to go to the bathroom,” Eloise sighed, annoyed at her bladder for making her get up.
“What for?” James asked almost annoyed, quickly realizing the stupidity of his question...but not quickly enough.
“Well I thought I would just sit in there to get away from you, what do you think?” she laughed as she wriggled out of bed and headed for the bathroom.
As she walked passed the window she noticed the frog sitting outside on the windowsill, looking in, and she hoped it hadn’t been watching their nocturnal escapades.
The absurdity of the thought made her giggle.
James watched her naked figure appreciatively from the bed. She had only been gone 5 seconds and he missed her already.
He rolled on his side and cuddled his pillow with a huge grin on his face.
He thought he’d had great sex before…but he was mistaken.
He had never experienced anything like that night with anyone else…ever.
And he easily worked out why too…because he had never loved anyone before. Not only did they give their bodies to each other, but also their hearts and their souls.
He was lost in his own daydreams until Eloise’s voice bellowed his name from the bathroom.
“JAMES!” she shrieked and he shot out of bed and raced straight to the bathroom, dreading what he would find.
“What’s wrong?” he asked in a panicky tone as he bounded naked through the door.
He found her standing in front of the mirror studying her reflection in horror.
When she went to the basin to wash her hands she was shocked by what the mirror had in store for her.
On the left side of her neck, just under her ear was a love bite, and not just any old love bite either, but a massive deep bruise. It was the mother of all love bites.
And it wasn’t the only one.
There were 3 more, scattered down her left hand side, right down to her belly button.
“Look…Look what you have done to me,” she stammered in horror.
Firstly a wave of relief swept over him that there was nothing seriously wrong with her, then the manly wave of pride hit.
He moved in and gently pushed her hair behind her ear to get a closer look.
“Wow! They are
impressive,” he said proudly as he studied his handy work. He had also noticed 2 smaller ones on her lower back but he wisely decided not to mention them.
“
IMPRESSIVE,” she hollered, “I look like a ….”
“Like a woman who has had an amazing night with her lover in a secluded cabin,” he finished seductively, “anyway…I didn’t hear you complaining at the time. In fact I would even go as far as to say you were rather enjoying yourself.”
“Like a cheap tart is what I was going to say,” she snapped but she couldn’t help but smile at the memory of it, “but I never said I wasn’t enjoying myself.”
“But,” she continued hoitily, “I don’t do hickeys.”
“Oh don’t be such a princess,” he huffed tickling her, “we are on 2 weeks holidays from work so there is no need to worry about anyone of importance seeing.”
They both began to feel anxious at the mention of work.
She, because she knew she had to break the news to him about her resignation sooner rather than later, and he, because he needed to talk some sense into her.
However neither of them wanted to put a dampener on the mood, and they both knew it would.
“Anyway I know what the real problem is,” he said cheekily trying to put the work issue at the back of his mind, “and I’ll make it my mission to fix it tonight.”
“What are you on about?” she asked confused.
“Well they are all on your left hand side, and I know how fickle you are about things being symmetrical, so tonight…it’s your right hand side’s turn,” he grinned raising his eyebrows.
“You are an imbecile,” she laughed, but she secretly looked forward to her other side getting such expert attention.
“Come on lets have a shower,” he suggested.
Eloise thought that was a wonderful idea. She went to get them a glass of wine each as James turned the shower on.
This time it was her turn to hear a cry from the bathroom.
“Aarrgghhh!” she heard from the shower and she raced into the bathroom with 2 the glasses of wine, pretty impressed that she didn’t spill a single drop.
“What?” she asked concerned as she stuck her head into the shower recess.
“My back…it’s stinging like crazy,” he blurted out in obvious discomfort.
“Well the water is probably too hot. Turn it down,” she instructed.
“No it’s not that hot,” he said bemused trying to get a look.
“Here let me see,” she said turning him around.
“Oh shit,” she muttered quietly.
All down his back were scratch marks…from his shoulder blades all the way down.
One on his left shoulder blade was particularly deep.
“What is it?” he said insistently.
“Um….,” she began nervously as she hopped in the shower and wrapped her arms around him, trying to take his mind off it, “its nothing. It must be just the warm water on your cold skin that’s all.”
“Nuh! It’s really painful,” he said as he stepped out of the shower and turned his back to the almost fogged up mirror.
Not fogged up enough however.
“What the fuck!” he exclaimed as he surveyed the damage.
She watched him from the shower, but she knew what his reaction would be.
“Look…look what you’ve done to me,” he mocked as he turned around to face her.
She rolled her eyes at him.
“Well I didn’t hear you complaining at the time. In fact I would even go as far as to say you were rather enjoying yourself,” she mocked back, as he laughed.
And then as she expected the male ego took over as he hopped back in the shower.
“Now that’s
impressive,” he said cockily as he slid his arms around her, “I bet no-one has caused you to do that before.”
“Oh please!” she laughed rolling her eyes again, “You know maybe us being together is a health hazard.”
“I think I am more than willing to put my body on the line,” he smiled as he began nibbling on her neck.
“That is so cheesy,” she sighed before seeking out his lips and kissing him hungrily.
They emerged from the bathroom half an hour later, with a few more scratches added to James’ impressive collection, and after raiding the fridge again they relaxed out on the veranda that overlooked the river.
She put her feet on his lap as he massaged them slowly and they tried to enjoy the peace and quiet. Except for one thing…that dam frog.
“Jesus Christ does that thing ever shut up,” she moaned as the croaking seemed to echo, making it ten times louder.
“Maybe it’s getting revenge on us for keeping it awake all night,” he replied cheekily, “and anyway, we are in the bush. You have to expect some kind of wildlife,” he laughed.
“I hate wildlife,” she said, feeling a bit guilty, but that’s how it was.
“Mmm, your alter ego would be disgusted. Bridget Parker you ain’t,” he teased.
She smiled uneasily at his remark, and wondered if this was the time to tell him what she had done. However she didn’t have to worry about bringing it up.
James hadn’t planned on discussing it yet, but the statement he had just made seemed like as good a lead in as any. He took a deep breath before he spoke.
“Speaking of,” he began carefully, “there is something I need to talk to you about…something important.”
She looked at him nervously. She couldn’t imagine what he was going to say next.
“Yesterday I got a phone call….from Susan…she told me.”
Eloise felt her heart sink and her stomach lurch. She wasn’t angry, but she was dreading the conversation she had been avoiding, the conversation she was now being thrown into without warning.
“Oh,” she managed to squeak.
He watched her and could see how uncomfortable she felt. He didn’t want to upset her, he just wanted to sort it out and get back to normal again.
“Look I know how much I upset you…my behaviour, Lisa doing what she did, and I understand why you reacted the way you did. If the tables were turned I probably would have done the same thing,” he said gently.
She smiled appreciatively at him and reached over and took his hand.
“Why didn’t you say anything before this?” she asked quietly.
“Because…getting you back was the most important thing to me. Showing you it was all a mistake, how sorry I was…that’s all I cared about last night. But I promised Susan that I would sort it out. So can you please call her…I’ll go and get your phone.”
Eloise put her hand on his chest softly to stop him, and he looked at her with a confused expression on his face.
“What? Let’s just get it out of the way now, so we don’t have it hanging over our heads.”
She felt flushed and a bit faint even. She really didn’t want to have this conversation now, but it was being forced upon her. She took a deep breath before she spoke.
“James…I love you,” she said a bit tearily.
“I love you too,” he replied with a worried half hearted smile.
“But,” she continued cautiously, “I’m not changing my mind. I’m not coming back.”
Tbc….
