Even now, ten years after becoming a father and almost twelve years after finding out that I was going to be a father, it seemed weird to me that mum was going away and leaving the house to me and Bridget. I know I’m twenty-eight years old and a father of two and all but I still feel like a teenager who has just been permitted to have my girlfriend sleep over whilst my parents were out. It must be because Bridget and I started so young, I was only eighteen and Bridget was only seventeen.
Our little girl India and her sister Anna are the light of mine and Bridget’s lives, they’re what keeps us going and gives me inspiration to work twelve hour days just so that I can take my usual Sunday off to be with my family.
So the same day that we arrived back in Erinsborough my mum and Paul left, they were flying to Beijing first to do some shopping and sightseeing then they were going on to Europe. They were due back for a visit on December 23rd but then they were leaving again til June so that they’d be back for Indy’s twelfth birthday.
Speaking on which, the day that mum and Paul left was the day before India turns eleven. Eleven years, it seemed like yesterday that I was holding my baby girl in my arms for the first time. That was a scary time in our lives, not knowing whether Indy would make it through the day or not. Luckily she did now she is here, well outside playing with her sister and cousins while mum and Paul packed the last few things. India was coming with me to drop them at the airport but Bridget and Anna were going to stay behind, Bridget claimed it was because she was sick but I knew it was because she was petrified of flying.
I was shocked at first when I heard that my wife had a fear of something, I was used to the brave, not-scared-of-anything woman I married. So for a week in June 2010 I’d booked us a flight to Byron Bay to celebrate our wedding anniversary and to celebrate Bridget coming home from hospital two weeks earlier.
I finished unpacking my clothes into the chest of drawers that Mum and Paul had given Bridget and I to store our clothes in and stepped out of the room. Bridget was asleep on the couch so I crept passed her and went outside. India was walking around with Anna on her back clinging on for dear life. Jye and Thomas were on the other side of the backyard playing together. Jye and Thomas are Oliver and Carmella’s sons, their identical twins and in some ways they seem like they don’t realize that other people exist. Chloe was lying on the trampoline reading a book and looking bored.
“Anna what are you doing to India?” She called out tiredly as she caught site of me coming out the door.
“She wont give back my teddy!” Anna yelled pelting India with punches and kicks.
“Stop it!” India snapped, “I’ll give it back when you’ve run to the gate and back ten times!”.
I decided to step in before India tortured her sister too much, “India, give Anna back the teddy” I said in my stern dad voice.
India jumped and turned around, “Hi dad I didn’t see you there”.
“Obviously not” I said trying to keep my face straight, “Give Anna back her toy or you’re not coming with me to say goodbye to Grandma and Grandpa Paul”.
“here Anna” India shoved it into her sisters arms.
Anna ran off happily to the boys to play with them and India turned to me, “Well are we going?”.
“Yes Grandma and Grandpa Paul are almost ready” I told her, “Be quiet mum’s asleep”.
“No I’m not” Bridget came into the kitchen yawning, “And your mum and Paul are sitting in the lounge waiting for you”.
I gave Bridget a kiss goodbye before heading into the lounge room, “Ready?”.
“Yep” Mum was pretty much bouncing with excitement.
“Thanks mate for this” Paul grinned at me.
“No problem Paul” I said.
We then headed out to my car together.

"You didnt think you could get rid of me that easy did you!" Oliver surprised mum by wheeling the pram that held Jye and Tom.
I tuned out of the conversation as i watched my nephews play together, Jye would hold up a block and Tom would take it and add it to the already very nicely crafted lego ship. The interesting thing was that Jye knew exactly what block Tom wanted without asking.
India tugged at my arm so i turned to her.
"Daddy" India said in her sweetest voice, "Can I get a coke?".
"Do you think your mother would let you have a coke?" I asked her.
India sighed and shook her head, "But mum doesnt need to know".
"I know she doesnt but she can see through walls you see and you wont be punished i will" I told her.
"Fine" India crossed her arms and looked back at the coke stall longingly.
I shrugged then gave mum and Paul goodbye hugs.
"Indy" Mum said, "Bye sweetheart".
India turned, glared at me, then smiled at mum and gave her a hug.
"Bye grandma, remember i want some expensive bags and things from France for Christmas!" She smiled then hugged Paul.
"Grandpa Paul, i'm expecting big things from you for Christmas!" She told him.
"Santa, santa, santa" both the boys said at the same time then went back to their blocks like nothing happened.
I looked at Oliver and he shot me a look as if to say 'Dont ask me i have no idea what my sons do'
"Alright guys" Mum smiled through her tears, "I'll see all of you on December 23rd!".
We all nodded in unison.
"India take care of mum and dad and Anna for me" Mum smiled at her.
"Dec look after your wife and daughters" Mum gave me a knowing look, knowing of what though?.
"Ollie and you boys, look after Carmella and Chlo" Mum smiled.
"This is the final boarding call" We heard an announcement over the PA system.
"Come on darling" Paul pulled her away from us and we waved at both of them.
"Well" Oliver clapped his hands together, "Whose for icecream? my shout!".
"Santa, santa, santa" The boys said in unison again.
This time Oliver, India and I all shared a weird look between us.
