Ok so I was at work and this fic just suddenly popped into my head from nowhere and I just had to write it.
Please go gentle on me I haven't written Fanfic before and I haven't written short stories since I did my GCSEs at school 8 years ago.
This is intended to be a stand alone fic so I don't intend to update it unless I have another sudden moment of inspiration.
I apologise for the Kacklan at the beginning but it is mainly a Decget Fanfic so please stick with it.
ETA: Judging by some of the reaction this fic as had so far I suggest you read it with a box of tissues.
I hope you enjoy it and I hope you cry as much as I did when I was writing it.
The Last Day On Earth
Didge had been watching over Dec and Indy ever since that dreadful July day her life had ended. She had watched as Dec had completely rejected life and his daughter and then come round to the idea of bringing her up on his own. She had watched as Dec had tried to move on with his life and fill the hole with someone new. But as the year had gone on it was the last couple of months leading up to the first anniversary of her death that had concerned her the most. Declan had come full circle and begun to withdraw inside himself once more. Indy was growing up so fast, with every day that went past she became more and more like her mother, she had Didge’s hair and her smile and her eyes. Most days in the last couple of months Dec could not bear to look at his daughter because she reminded him too much of what he had lost. Rebecca had been taking care of India ever since the day two months ago when she came home from work to find India sitting in a dirty nappy, hungry, tired and crying her head off and Declan sitting in the lounge room, curled up with his knees in his arms, rocking back and forth sobbing his heart out because he couldn’t take the loneliness anymore. Rebecca had tried to get Declan to see the doctor about it but he was too stubborn and macho to do it. She had some small hope though that Kate may be able to bring him back out of himself again. Declan had been seeing Kate on and off for the last six months. When they first started seeing each other Rebecca thought that Declan was perhaps ready to move on with his life, but the truth was he was just terrified of being lonely and was just reaching out and grabbing anything that showed the slightest chance of relieving some of his loneliness.
Kate had become increasingly aware of Declan’s unhappiness and had booked them a session on a climbing wall at the local leisure centre to try and cheer him up. Although he was reluctant to go Rebecca had bundled him up and pushed him out the door.
When they got there they had their safety briefing and got harnessed up and Kate climbed the wall first with Declan belaying her rope at the bottom. Kate was terrified of heights and couldn’t believe what she was doing, he had better be worth it she thought to herself as she continued to climb the wall. She eventually reached the top of the wall and tapped on the top which was her sign to Declan to let her down. Declan lowered her down and when she reached the bottom she went bouncing across to Declan really proud of herself. “I did it! I did it!” she cried as she got closer, but Declan wasn’t interested, he sighed and said “whatever” and then just stood there looking miserable. “Come on Mr.Moody it’s your turn!” Kate said with a bounce in her voice. Without a word Declan clipped himself on the end of the rope and started half-heartedly climbing the wall. Didge had been watching all this and had decided she needed to intervene for the sake of her husband and daughter. Declan continued to climb the wall. He begun to think of the last time he had been on the climbing wall with Didge. He was just thinking to himself “Last time I was climbing this wall Didge dropped my rope!” when suddenly the rope snapped and Declan came crashing to the ground from three quarters of the way up the wall. Kate rushed over towards him shouting his name “Declan! Declan are you alright? Declan can you hear me?” she went to try and move him to see if he was alright but the instructor had run over by this time and stopped her from touching him. “ You mustn’t move him incase he has injured his spine” he said. The instructor then turned to one of the other people in the group and told them to go to reception and call an ambulance.
Kate went and called Rebecca and told her what had happened and arranged to meet her at the hospital. Rebecca garbed India and her keys and set off for the hospital, thinking out loud to herself on her way to the hospital Rebecca said to India “Why do they always have to drop him?”
The Ambulance came and put Declan on a spinal board still unconscious and took him and Kate off to hospital.
Declan began to wake up and slowly open his eyes, he started looking around without moving his head but he could not make sense of where he was. He was lying on a blanket in the most beautiful gardens he had ever seen. As he lay there still trying to make sense of where he was, heard a voice say “I wondered when you were going to wake up” his head was still misty but he knew that he recognised the voice that had just spoken to him, but he could not place it, as his head begun to clear he started to realise who the voice had reminded him of “but that’s impossible” he thought to himself. He sat up and looked around him to see where the voice had come from. He turned around and looked behind him, he then closed his eyes and shook his head in disbelief at what he was seeing, he counted to three and opened his eyes again “Didge!” he exclaimed with tears now running down his cheeks. “You took your time” Didge said wiping away the tears from his cheeks with her finger. He held her tight to his body and sobbed into her shoulder “Didge I’ve missed you so much!” “I’ve missed you too Declan” She said as she continued to hold him and caress his back. “But how, I thought you were dead?” Declan asked still in shock. “I am” Didge replied pulling away to look into his eyes.
Declan’s memory was starting to come back to him, he had a flashback of his fall from the climbing wall. Declan started to ask “Am I....?” but Didge cut him off “...Dead, no you’re just unconscious in Erinsborough hospital, come and look” Declan got up and Didge lead him over to a wall at the end of the garden. They looked over the wall and looked down on Declan’s body lying in the hospital “See there you are safe and sound with your Mum, Indy and Kate waiting for you to come round.” Didge reassured him. Knowing that his body was safe in the hospital Declan began wondering why his consciousness hadn’t caught up with his body yet. “Where are we Didge and why are we here?” He asked. “These are the Gardens of Life” Didge explained “This is where you come before you go to heaven. It is also a place where people who have already made it into heaven can come to watch over there loved ones. I have come here every day since I died to watch over you and Indy and I have noticed that you have been very sad and lonely without me particularly over the last couple of months. I saw you today climbing that wall with all the life sucked out of you and I couldn’t stand by and let you suffer any longer, I had to do something so I decided to snapped your rope so that you could come and talk with me to sort things out, I hope I didn’t hurt you too much.” “ Who cares if it hurt or not, you know I would go though anything to be with you again.” Declan replied. Didge smiled at this and then went on to ask Dec “So how is everyone?” Hoping this would help Dec start to open up about his problems.
“Let’s see, Ringo has gone up to Sydney to do an advanced Paramedics course, he decided to become a Paramedic after you died because he believed that had a paramedic found you quicker then you would have survived. But Donna’s not very happy he’s gone. Donna is doing a Fashion Design Course at Eden Hills Uni, She had me dressed up like a dress makers dummy a few months back trying to work on one of her designs, that was funny. Susan got sick again so Sunny decided that it was best if she went back to Korea which upset Zeke especially when she emailed him to say she didn’t want to stay in contact with him anymore. But Zeke seemed to move on pretty quickly, he met this girl at schoolies called Mia who he is wrapped up in now.” Declan explained.
“What about Kate?” Didge asked nervously. Although she didn’t want Declan to be alone she still didn’t feel comfortable with him seeing someone else.
“She’s alright I guess, she has been very busy with her family.” Declan said beginning to feel uncomfortable.
“I know you two have been spending a lot of time together” Didge commented.
“Oh” Declan said now feeling very uncomfortable.
“Don’t worry Dec, I’m not upset,” she said crossing her fingers behind her back because she knew she was lying. “I want you to move on with your life and be happy.”
But that’s just it Didge, I can’t” His voice began to break “I have tried so hard to move on but I just can’t, I like Kate, she is a very good mate, and I thought that if I tried to get closer to her then we could be together and I wouldn’t feel so alone anymore, but I don’t love her Didge and I never will, I don’t think I will ever love anyone ever again. I just feel so alone all of the time and it makes my life unbearable. I go to bed at night praying that I won’t wake up in the morning and I wake up each morning devastated that I have.”
“But what about India? She needs you” Didge asked concerned at what Declan had just told her, she new he was depressed but she didn’t realise he was that bad.
“I just can’t bear to look at her, Didge. she’s got your eyes, she’s got your nose, she’s got your hair and she’s got your smile, she grows more and more like you every day and it hurts Didge, it hurts too much” Declan said breaking down towards the end. Bridget hugged him tight and comforted him. As he calmed down she began to run her fingers through his hair absent mindedly.
After a short while Declan began to cry again.
“What’s wrong Dec?” Didge asked confused as to why he was crying again.
“I can’t go back!” Dec sobbed.
“What do you mean you can’t go back?” Didge asked shocked “You’ve got to go back and look after India, she needs you.”
“I can’t do it Didge I’ve lost you once and I don’t think I could bare to loose you again and go back and look at India day after day for the next seventy years and see the wife I lost twice.” Dec sobbed
“But Declan you’ve got to!” Bridget said slightly panicked
“I’m sorry” Declan said as he closed his eyes and held is breath.
“Declan what are you doing?” Didge asked concerned. “Declan Stop it” she said getting more panniced. “Declan you Promised Me!” she said getting more distraught “DECLAN NO!” She said shaking him completely panic stricken.
Suddenly Didge heard a long continuous tone coming from over the wall. She looked down and the heart beat on the monitor in Dec’s hospital room had stopped. She watched as Dr Karl and Jodie the nurse rushed in and cleared Rebecca, Kate and Indy out of the room. They tried for over an hour with more determination than Didge had ever seen from anyone to resuscitate him but in the end they could not save him. Didge stood there with tears running down her face as Karl had to break the news to Rebecca that Declan didn’t make it. Rebecca broke down in tears completely devastated at loosing her son.
Didge didn’t know how to feel, She was devastated that her daughter would now never know either of her parents, but at the same time she couldn’t help but feel slightly flattered that Dec would give his life to be with her. Just then she felt a breath down the back of her neck as Declan wrapped his arms around her from behind and whispered in her ear “I’m sorry Didge I had to do it.”
“I know” she replied still crying. Deep down she knew that Declan couldn’t continue living alone. And although it would be sad to watch her daughter grow up without ever knowing her parents she knew Rebecca and Paul and her parents would be there to look out for India, to provide for her, and bring her up right.
Didge and Declan continued to visit the Gardens of Life every day to watch over India as she grew up and although it was hard for them to watch their daughter grow up without them particularly on the milestones like India’s first day of school and her wedding day they were glad they were together and found comfort in each other.
