TITLE: It Was Always You
AUTHOR: Hannah
FEEDBACK: All feedback welcome, good and bad!
DISCLAIMER: These characters aren't mine – all belong to Fremantle Media
SUMMARY: Set around the Formal in May 2008. Much the same as happened in the show is relevant to the story, I.e. Declan rejected Didge after the accident, Josh turned up, the roof collapse happened, Angus happened, Josh left Didge so she could be with Dec, but they never got together etc. One thing I'm ignoring in my fic is that Ringo and Didge got together before the Formal.
PAIRING/CHARACTERS: Declan, Bridget, Ringo, Rachel, Taylah and Zeke mainly. Other characters may pop up now and again briefly.
YEAR: May 2008
SPOILERS: None
Chapter 1
Rachel, Bridget and Taylah were standing by their lockers during recess, gossiping about the upcoming school formal. It was the night they'd been anxiously waiting for all year, a night to dress up and party hard, and a night many hoped would be full of romance.
"I cannot wait for Saturday, I've been looking forward to the formal for months!" Taylah exclaimed excitedly.
"I know, me too! Should be a great night," Rachel agreed.
"I still need to buy a dress, nightmare!" Didge groaned.
Just then, Zeke, Ringo and Declan sauntered up and joined them. Zeke gave Taylah a peck on the cheek as he greeted her, whilst the others said their hellos.
"So what are you girls gossiping about?" Declan asked, grinning.
"Just formal stuff, nothing you guys would be interested in!" Rachel joked.
"Oh, I don't know, try us!" Declan responded, before realizing his error, "on second thoughts, maybe not, it'll all be dresses this and make-up that! Not really guy stuff is it? Besides, we've got our own preparations to discuss anyway."
"Oh dear, that sounds ominous!" Bridget laughed, adding "I hope it doesn't involve contraband alcohol again, you've only just been forgiven by your mum for the last time Declan!" Bridget scolded, but then laughed.
"Hey, you sound like my mum!" Declan said, trying to sound shocked by Bridget's comments, before adding "nope, I wouldn't dare try and sneak booze in, my mum would seriously kill me if I tried that again!"
The gang laughed out loud, realizing how true Declan's words were. Rebecca was one scary mama when she was pushed, and they didn't fancy witnessing that again anytime soon.
"Right guys, we'll see you later, we're off to the General Store, got formal stuff to discuss, see you later" Rachel announced, and she, Taylah and Bridget headed off, leaving the three boys to chat amongst themselves.
"Okay, see you later girls," Ringo replied, before turning to face Declan, a sly smile forming on his face. "So I guess everything between you two is getting back to normal at last?"
"What do you mean?" Declan asked, slightly confused.
"You and Didge. Things seem to be less hostile and awkward than they have recently," Ringo responded.
"I guess. Still a little weird, but I think we are slowly getting there," Declan said.
"Well at least you two are speaking again! Even joking, that's got to be a good sign!" said Zeke.
"I suppose" Declan said, half-heartedly, not really believing his own words.
"So, are you going to go for it at the formal," Ringo enquired.
"Are you joking?!" Declan asked surprised. "We are just friends, I've given up trying to be anything more, she's made it pretty clear she's not interested in me" Declan said, trying to mask the hurt in his voice. He paused for a second, before continuing, "no, I'm over Didge, we are best at being friends, nothing more. Hell, you'd have more chance with her than me!"
As he said it, he instantly regretted it. He'd always thought Ringo might have had a thing for Didge, even if he'd never admitted to it, especially given Didge and Dec's history.
"Really?" Ringo asked. "And you wouldn't have a problem with that, I mean hypothetically speaking. Because she's a great girl, and I've been spending a lot of time with her recently, and we get on so well. If I'm being honest, I really like her Dec. But I thought you two would eventually sort out your problems and get together. So obviously I would never want to step on your toes."
Declan couldn't believe his ears. He was in shock. He couldn't believe that his best mate had feelings for the girl that he also liked, maybe even loved. Even though Declan had given up actively trying to win her heart, he knew deep down he wasn't over her. And now he'd all but given the green light to his best mate to ask her out. What made it more ironic and painful was that it was Declan himself that had probably initiated Ringo's growing feelings for Didge. After the awkwardness between Bridget and Dec had begun, Dec had asked Ringo to look after Didge, obviously unbeknownst to her, and as a result, they'd been spending a lot more time together. Declan couldn't believe he hadn't noticed or realized this could have caused Ringo, and perhaps Didge, to start having feelings for one another. But he knew he was too late, he'd messed things up with her too many times to expect her not to move on. But with his best mate?
"Dec? Earth to Dec, anyone there?" Ringo asked, waving his hand in front of Declan's face.
Declan suddenly came back to earth, and answered "Umm, yeah, what? Oh yeah, Didge, sorry was miles away. So do you think she likes you like that?" Declan asked hesitantly, fearful of the answer.
"I've no idea to be honest, she just acts the same as always. We always have a laugh with each other, and we get on really well. So maybe she feels it too." Ringo answered, and after a slight pause continued on "you know what, I'm just going to do it, you only live once and all that."
"Good on you mate, I'm sure she'll say yes!" Zeke announced supportively.
Declan just stood there, not knowing how to react and trying desperately to process what Ringo had just admitted to. Then suddenly he realized his silence would probably speak volumes, so he quickly answered.
"Yeah, it'll be fine, she'll say yes mate, I'm sure of it."
"I hope so, I don't want to freak her out! But are you sure you're okay with this Dec? 'Cause just say if you're not, I'd understand," said Ringo.
"No, like I said, we're just friends, honestly. Go for it. I want her to be happy, and you too mate, so if you two can make each other happy, then all the better" Declan said, trying to sound sincere. Try as he might, he knew he didn't sound too convincing, so with that he made up an excuse to leave, "I best get going, I'll see you in English later."
"Okay, see you later. And thanks man, glad we had this chat" Ringo said happily.
"Yeah, of course, no worries," Dec replied, turning afterwards and walking away, hiding his hurt expression from Ringo and Zeke.
Declan headed outside and sat on one of the benches, looking out at the oval. He couldn't believe it. What if his best mate actually started seeing the girl he liked, no, loved? He didn't think he could bear seeing them together. But then again, he thought to himself, perhaps it would be easier seeing her with Ringo, rather than anyone else. At least he could trust Ringo, and knew he'd take care of Didge. Why did he have to open his big mouth! He'd pretty much given his permission to Ringo to crack onto Didge.
"God, why am I such an idiot?" Declan muttered to himself.
