In other words..ITS MADE UP!!James turned off the Ocean Road onto a dirt track that wound its way through beautiful rainforest and then finally pulled over into a clearing in what seemed like the middle of nowhere.
“Wow,” Eloise sighed, “that was amazing. I thought I would get annoyed with my hair blowing in my face, but it wasn’t as gusty as I thought it would be.”
He smiled excitedly and leaned over to softly kiss her on the lips.
“So! When do I get a drive,” she asked expectantly as they hopped out and began gathering their picnic gear.
“You’re joking?” he said looking at her like she had lost her marbles.
“What?” she asked mortified at the look on his face, “I’m a great driver.”
He stared at her blankly not saying a word.
“Are you saying I’m a bad driver?” she asked, hurt.
“You aren’t a bad driver…just a terrible parker,” he added softly.
“I am
not!” she shrieked.
“El, have you not seen the front of your car. Its got scratches all over it,” he said incredulously.
“I hit something…
once. Anyway council shouldn’t put poles where I’m not expecting them,” she replied huffily.
He rolled his eyes and shook his head.
“And what about the other 50 scratches? I suppose they weren’t your fault either.”
“Well my car is a pile of crap anyway...who cares about a few scratches,” she shrugged.
“You aren’t doing much to sell yourself. I think I would feel more comfortable driving it off a cliff,” he laughed.
“You’ll keep,” she said deadpan as they headed towards a trail through the trees.
“Um… aren’t you going to put the roof up?” she asked worried.
“It will be fine. There’s not a cloud in the sky,” he replied flippantly.
Eloise couldn’t believe he was leaving his brand new ‘used’ Porsche alone with its roof down. She adored him, but at that moment she wondered how such an intelligent man could be so daft sometimes…and she decided to tell him so.
“You know for an intelligent man you really are daft sometimes. I mean what if a bird poops in it?” she said innocently.
“Then I won’t take her out again,” he joked with an evil grin.
“Oh…ha-ha,” she said rolling her eyes.
“Just chill! Let me worry about the car, relax, and just enjoy the pleasure of my company,” he teased.
She shook her head in bewilderment but decided it was best to just shut her mouth and follow him into the forest.
They walked for about 10 minutes along a narrow trail and just as Eloise was about to start complaining they emerged into the most beautiful place she had ever seen.
In the middle of the forest there was a beautiful lagoon with a waterfall at one end, and a huge array of colourful shrubs and flowers surrounding it. All she could hear were birds chirping happily and the sound of the waterfall. It was their very own private paradise.
“Gorgeous isn’t it,” James commented as he watched the awe on her face as she took it all in.
“I don’t know what to say,” she gushed “it’s stunning.”
James laid out some blankets on the longish grass as Eloise studied her surroundings, and he unpacked another of his latest purchases.
“I’ve got something else to show you,” he called out to her.
”What else have you bought,” he heard her amused voice coming from the bush somewhere.
“Oh God…she really does know me too well,” he laughed to himself.
She emerged from the bush and sat next to him on the rug.
He held up the new camera he bought after he left the caryard the previous day.
“Hang on a minute,” she said mouth agape, “firstly how come you got a pay rise, and secondly how come I didn’t?”
“Pffftt…As if,” he laughed as he turned the camera on and began showing her all of its magical powers.
She watched him intently as he went through every button and what its function was. To her it had more buttons than the space shuttle and she really wasn’t that interested in the science of photography, but his enthusiasm was infectious, and she loved that he wanted to share his passions with her. Her heart swelled with love for him as she watched his face beam with excitement. All of a sudden her desire to tell him that she loved him almost overtook her, but something held her back. She wasn’t quite ready for that yet, and of course there was that niggling doubt that maybe he didn’t quite reciprocate.
“So do you want to help me find interesting subjects worthy of my camera,” his voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
“Yeah! I would love to. Let’s eat first though,” she said as he got up and unpacked the picnic basket, and after they satisfied their hunger they went searching for photo opportunities.
They spent ages looking at different flowers and she was amazed at his ability to know what would make a good shot
“You know what would look great? If you stand on that ledge behind the waterfall,” he suggested excitedly.
“But I’ll get soaked,” she said nervously as they headed around the edge of the lagoon towards the waterfall.
“Well strip off then,” he said raising his eyebrows.
She looked at him blankly.
“All right,’ she shrugged flippantly as she whipped her shirt over her head and James’s mouth slowly started to drop as she reached up seductively to untie her bikini top.
“As if,” she teased dropping her arms and sticking her tongue out at him.
“You tease,” he spluttered.
“Well that’s payback for the crack about my parking,” she replied as she carefully made her way around the back of the waterfall.
“Wow! Its really gorgeous in here,” she called out as he took some shots. When he had finished he stood and watched her looking at the falling water. She looked so beautiful in the mist, in her bikini, short denim shorts and bare feet, her now long curls falling down her back.
He snapped out of his reverie as she carefully made her way out and he took her hand and led her over to the blanket. He really wanted to take her in his arms and kiss her, but he didn’t trust himself to stop at that, so he sat down and began flicking through the photos he had taken as she knelt behind him, leaning over his shoulder.
“You really are so good at this,” she said looking at him, playing with his hair, “maybe you should consider displaying them one day or even selling them.”
“Really?” he answered pleasantly surprised and chuffed that she liked his work, “I have never thought about it like that. It’s not like I’m a professional.”
“But you just have a natural eye for it,” she said softly before she began gently nibbling on his ear.
She couldn’t help herself and his sharp intake of breath only gave her encouragement to keep going. He closed his eyes and turned his head slightly to give her better access, and he moaned quietly as she let her lips move down to his neck. His entire body ached for her and when he couldn’t take anymore he turned around and kissed her passionately. They fell down on the blanket together and kissed for ages like they didn’t have a care in the world.
“You know you are living dangerously don’t you?” he whispered as he rolled them over so he was on top of her.”
“Uh huh,” she answered as she traced his lips with her finger and she wrapped her legs around his waist.
“I think we really need to leave now,” he said closing his eyes, trying to get himself together, “I won’t be able to stop myself if we stay here 10 seconds longer.”
Eloise knew they shouldn’t, knew that it would change everything, and that scared her.
But she couldn’t resist him anymore.
“Maybe I don’t want you to stop,” she said nervously.
He couldn’t believe what she was saying, he loved what she was saying, but he still felt apprehensive.
“He rested his elbows on either side of her face and tangled his fingers in her hair.
“But…I thought you wanted to wait. Wait until we both left work…together. It’s going to change everything. There will be no going back for me so you need to be sure you want this.”
Eloise sighed. She had to tell him exactly how much she really felt for him, how much she loved him..
“I’m not sure of anything. All I know is that it’s too difficult now,” she hesitated as she looked into his eyes, “I need to show you how much I….”
Before she could utter the ‘L’ word a huge crack of thunder roared above them scaring the daylights out of them. They both jumped a mile and when they looked up at the sky they were horrified at what they saw. Unbeknownst to them since they had been canoodling on the blanket the weather from the south had started rolling in and now as they looked to the heavens the sky was black and ominous.
“Jesus,” James uttered shocked, “where did that come from.”
“God it’s going to bucket down any minute,” Eloise said.
He looked over at her and pulled her back down on the blanket with him.
“And you know what? I don’t care,” he said as he gently caressed her face and then kissed her so passionately it took her breath away.
She didn’t want that moment to end. All she wanted was to make love to him right there on that blanket in the middle of a ferocious storm, but there was one slight problem.
“James,” she gasped, reluctantly pulling away, “the car. It will get ruined if we don’t get back before the rain starts.”
“Oh sh#t….but,” James moaned, he really didn’t want to go anywhere right at that moment and he certainly didn’t want her to think the car was more important to him than her.
“Its OK. That car will be destroyed if we don’t get that roof closed. Hurry up!” she said as she jumped up and started frantically grabbing their belongings.
By this stage the wind started picking up and by the time they raced along the track and approached the car large raindrops were beginning to fall. They threw their gear in the back and pulled the roof over, and just as they jumped in, the rain began bucketing down.
They sat in the car, speechless, until they both turned and looked at each other.
“Well I have never been one to say I told you so…but,” Eloise began.
“Don’t,” he moaned.
Eloise couldn’t help but smile.
“Look, we got here in time. There’s hardly a drop,” she said looking around.
“It’s not the car I’m upset about,” he sighed grabbing her hand, “even mother nature is against us.”
They both stared at each other despondently, until Eloise couldn’t take it anymore.
“Maybe we can go back to your place,” she suggested as she kissed his fingers.
“No. Rob is having his parents over for dinner. What about your place?” he asked hopefully.
“Sal is having Ben over for a D and M. Its just not meant to be,” she sighed, “the moment’s passed.”
“Maybe it’s not meant to be…today. But it will happen,” he said looking intensely into her eyes.
If she wasn’t already a puddle of goo she certainly was now. She leaned over and kissed him softly, and they continued to kiss as the storm raged outside around them. Little did they know, however, that their own lives were about to hit stormy weather and that their relationship was about to change…forever.
